Event: Match Worn Shirts

Date: Ended 8th April 2023

Venue: Online

Host: Match Worn Shirts Chelsea FC

Contributors: Chelsea Football team

Exciting opportunity to own a match-worn shirt!
Arms Around The Child sadly lost their friend and global ambassador, Christian Atsu, in the terrible earthquake that devastated parts of Turkey and Syria on February 6th, 2023. He was laid to rest in a respectful state funeral in Accra, Ghana on 17th March where hundreds of people paid their last respects.

Christian was a benevolent and humble man who was born into poverty but followed his dreams and became an international football player; here he was able to use his status and talent to help others. He was signed by Chelsea Football Club in 2013 and went on to have a very successful footballing career.

We are excited to tell you that Christian’s former football clubs Chelsea and Everton have pledged to auction the shirts worn by the players and other items from their Premier League match at Stamford Bridge on March 18th. The money raised will be going to Arms Around the Child, and it will fund the completion of the school we started building with Christian in Senya Beraku, Ghana in 2018.

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta said: ‘This initiative allows us to celebrate the life of Christian, an individual who was well-loved within the club and someone we deeply miss. On March 18th we faced another of Christian’s former teams, Everton, and it feels appropriate that we look to build on the fantastic charity work Christian had started with Arms Around The Child to build a new school that will benefit orphaned children in his home country. Christian’s wonderful personality shone through during the times we shared together and any contribution to the shirt auction will offer valuable support towards the legacy he leaves behind.’

We have some exciting new additions to the auction including a signed Gary Cahill shirt, an ex-Chelsea centre-back from 2012-2019!

Christian regularly visited the children’s home and was the school’s main benefactor. He was an advocate for education for all, believing that schooling could provide children with a brighter future. Everton captain Seamus Coleman said: “Everyone connected with the Club was devastated to hear the terrible news about Christian. I remember him fondly from his brief time with us, as a warm, unassuming person whose personality shone brightly. This project to build a new school for orphaned children is a fitting legacy for someone who never forgot his humble roots. Hopefully, the shirt auction will help achieve that aim and Christian’s name will forever be associated with such a worthwhile venture.”
