Brimming with cultural richness and activity, Pie Herring’s Senya stands as the latest triumph from her Ghanaian collection. This vibrant multi-figure scene was created during the artist’s time spent at the AATC Artist Residency located in Senya Beraku, Ghana. During her stay Pie spent much of her time at the shoreline sketching the local fishing community. The artist was captivated by the energy of her surroundings as she observed the local life teeming with activity, colour and character. Pie captures and celebrates the vibrancy of community in her painting Senya. Multiple moments are rendered into one as figures merge in and out of one another. Its complex rendering detail women dressed in colourful traditional fabrics preparing food and selling baked goods. Children play as smaller infants rest tightly secured to their mother’s backs. Handcrafted fishing boats lined the beach with their charismatic flags filling the air. Although busy in depiction, Senya stops time for its audience. Viewers spend time exploring the piece with every encounter revealing something new within the narrative.
